A story with a beginning, middle and end

Running in tomorrow's Tampa Bay Times ...

  1. This story is too cute. After talking about story endings in class last night, I see now how this story ends with a universal truth that everyone can relate to, rather than simply ending the action of the story.

I also noticed the action is told in presence tense and the backstory in past tense. I don't know if all narratives are written that way, but it feels engaging when I read it.

  2. Very good points. And the tenses issue -- you are right about how present and past are used, and while not all narratives are written this, it is a good, simple way to organize them.

  3. " I don't want something that looks like it's been bought on a budget." Ladykiller! This kid knows at least one universal truth.

The descriptions of Sarah and the items in the store are effective. In a very small space the writer makes me believe Austin made the right choice.

  4. The ending. Oh my God, I love it.

This story has a much more fluid voice than the adoption story. I assume because of the voice of the boy in the interview (?) and I like that she conveys that to us. This story also ends with an unknown outcome, but it's easier to handle, a smaller life issue, than Davion's situation.
